About Us

Boat Safari History

Since 2005, Hasitha Boat Safari has been one of the pioneering and highly-regarded operators, sharing the natural marvels of the Madu River wetland ecosystem with visitors from around the world. The Madu Ganga is a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve, renowned for its rich biodiversity, critical mangrove forests, and tranquil waterways.

Our mission is rooted in providing an authentic, educational, and sustainable experience, allowing guests to witness traditional cinnamon cultivation, explore island temples, and observe the unique wildlife that thrives within this precious Sri Lankan coastal wetland.

Over nearly two decades of operation, we have built a strong reputation for excellence in eco-tourism, combining adventure with environmental awareness. Our commitment to preserving the delicate ecosystem of the Madu River while sharing its wonders with visitors has made us a trusted and respected name in Sri Lankan tourism. We work closely with local communities, supporting their livelihoods while ensuring that our operations benefit both visitors and the natural environment.

Our experienced boatmen undergo regular training in navigation, safety protocols, and environmental conservation practices to ensure the highest standards of service and environmental responsibility.

The Madu River, also known as Madu Ganga, spans approximately 915 hectares and is one of the last remaining tracts of pristine mangrove forests in Sri Lanka. This unique ecosystem supports a complex food web and serves as a critical breeding ground for numerous marine and bird species. As stewards of this environment, we take our responsibility seriously and actively participate in conservation initiatives.

Our Experience

We offer unforgettable boat safaris through the pristine waters of the Madu River, where you can experience the beauty of nature up close. Our guided tours take you through winding mangrove tunnels, past ancient temples on small islands, and into the heart of one of Sri Lanka's most important wetland ecosystems.

Whether you're interested in bird watching, learning about traditional cinnamon processing, or simply enjoying the peaceful serenity of the river, our experienced guides ensure you have a memorable and enriching experience that connects you with the natural and cultural heritage of this remarkable region.

Our knowledgeable guides are fluent in multiple languages including English, Sinhala, and Tamil, and possess deep understanding of the local ecology, history, and culture. They are passionate about sharing their knowledge and will point out various bird species, explain the significance of the mangrove ecosystem, share fascinating stories about the island temples, and demonstrate traditional practices that have been part of this region for centuries.

The Madu River ecosystem is home to over 300 species of plants, 250 species of vertebrates including fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals, and numerous invertebrates. During your safari, you may encounter monitor lizards, water monitors, various species of monkeys including the endemic purple-faced langur, and if you're lucky, even estuarine crocodiles basking on the riverbanks. The area is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, with over 70 species of birds including kingfishers, herons, egrets, cormorants, and many migratory species that visit during different seasons.
